Sunnybrook Golf Bowl Motel About Us

About Sunnybrook Golf Bowl Motel

Sunnybrook Golf Bowl Motel’s history dates back to 1936 in Utica, Michigan when our 18 hole Donald Ross designed Golf Course was established. In 1962 an additional 9 hole course was built along with a 58 lane bowling & entertainment center. With the popularity, the owner at that time decided to build a motel adjacent to the establishment, which was completed in 1968. As Utica, Michigan changed to Sterling Heights, Michigan and the population grew, Sunnybrook maintained its popularity.

Through the 1970’s and the early 1980’s, Sunnybrook was the “go to” place to be and be seen. Great promotion, a clean center and atypical high scores made Sunnybrook the true “showcase center” in the area. Hosting many Professional Bowlers Association events, up to and including the PBA National Championship (today known as the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour) just added to the mystique and aura of Sunnybrook.

1998 brought new ownership; Randy Shank along with his wife Cheryl & daughter Sarah took the helm with one goal in mind, “Make Sunnybrook even better than it was in the old days.”

“I knew what we were getting into when we purchased Sunnybrook” Randy states. “I had been the accountant for the facility for 6 years and then the General Manager for 13 years. I was originally surprised by the long days and nights. I thought I was working hard putting in 10 to 12 hours a day as GM. After the purchase, I was putting in 15 to 16 hours a day seven days a week. In our eyes, when we purchased Sunnybrook we were buying potential for improvement with an eye to increasing sales and improving existing resources.”

“After over twelve years at the helm, my family and our outstanding and dedicated staff have righted the ship here at Sunnybrook. With well over one million dollars invested and much sweat by all, Sunnybrook has returned as the gem of metropolitan Detroit and, based on comments from our tried and true customers, Sunnybrook has come back to its former glory and beyond. It is definitely worth all the effort when you enjoy what you do.”

Golf Course

The 27 hole golf course, once flat and overgrown, has blossomed into a well manicured and challenging track. With raised tee boxes, newly defined fairways, new approaches and collars, additional sand traps, smooth greens and a state-of- the- art irrigation system, the course has been reborn. Sunnybrook's Golf leagues, open play and outings, have grown considerably as the course has grown into shape.

Bowling Center

The 58-lane bowling center underwent many changes designed to update the old facility and bring it back to life. All new state-of-the-art Qubica scoring systems and beautiful BACK-LIT masking units, and new elevated stadium-like seating make it conducive to view tournaments and outings. The new state-of-the-art automatic bumper system has become popular with families and group outings because when a child is up, the bumper automatically rises in front of each gutter and when an adult is up, the bumpers automatically lower. This feature allows families and groups made up of various ages to enjoy bowling together on the same lane. The new ceiling tiles, air filtration system, four (4) new 12.5 X 12.5 projection big screen TV system over the lanes, and clean, renovated touch-free restrooms are features that have contributed in keeping our facility packed with league bowlers, open bowlers, bowling fundraisers, local, state & national tournaments (large & small), bowling parties and bowling outings.

Sunnybrook hosted the 2003 Professional Women’s Bowling Association which was the biggest tournament on the PWBA circuit. We also held the 2004 & 2005 Senior PBA U.S. Opens. The first ever Michigan High School Athletic Association State Bowling Championships were held in 2004, they returned in 2005 and are set to return in March 2006. State of Michigan and the National Knights of Columbus Tournaments, National Elks Tournaments, Yearly PBA regional tournaments, Special Olympics and many other charitable fundraisers are held at Sunnybrook as well as High School meets, Alro Steel/Michigan Junior Masters Association, and YABA City Tournaments.

Our comfortable guest rooms in the motel also have been completely renovated. Each room was furnished with new carpeting, new bedding, new bathroom fixtures, new televisions and new furniture. We offer on-site laundry services, fax services, lighted parking, and security cameras throughout for added comfort and security. The motel is connected to the bowling center so you never have to leave the building to eat, drink or simply enjoy yourself.

Banquet / Meeting Facility

Our Banquet / Meeting Facility underwent a major renovation as well. We installed new plush carpeting, new chandeliers, a new bar facility, new wall dressings, a new large screen projection TV with computer and DVD hook-ups, and a new portable dance floor that can be requested for any occasion. The Banquet facility can accommodate parties of 20 to 300 people and, for your viewing enjoyment, comes with a great Golf Course view. Of course we also offer full Catering services and party coordinators for any function.

Sports Lounge

Sunnybrook’s Center Ice Sports Lounge offers an expanded bar area with more comfortable seating, a large lounge area with high top tables & chairs, new lights, new coolers, 14 large TV’s for easy viewing from anywhere in the lounge, Golden Tee Golf, Darts, Pool Tables, Mega Touch video, sports memorabilia and food and drink specials every night.

“Our goal was to make Sunnybrook like it was in the old days – a destination for travelers and local people to enjoy a complete recreation, lodging and banquet/business facility. Our major renovations have been accomplished. We get up early and go to bed late here at Sunnybrook to ensure that our goals continue to be met and that we keep improving all facets of the business.”

“We want to thank all of our loyal customers for their patronage, TCF Bank for being such a great financial partner through our renovation process, and to our great customer orientated and dedicated staff that carries on our Sunnybrook philosophy day after day.”
